Lily Monigold - Writer Teacher/Position: Mrs. Hobson - English Teacher What inspired you to become a teacher and how old were you when you knew that is what you wanted to do? I knew pretty early on that I wanted to go into a service profession where I could help people. Growing up in LeRoy, I had terrific teachers--shout out to my high school English teachers, including the famous Mr. Meyer! I always enjoyed reading and discussing literature. I remember sitting in class thinking This (teaching literature) is something I could really see myself doing. Have you ever thought about pursuing a different career? If so, what? I think when I retire, I’m going to pursue another dream of mine, which is to be a voice actor who reads literature for audiobooks. I’d also like to read for kids in story time at the elementary school and for people in nursing homes who just need someone to visit with them. What is the best part about your job? The best part is when I feel like my students enjoy whatever it is we’re covering at the time. How long have you been teaching? This is my sixteenth year. What is your favorite book, book genre, and style of writing to write? Just like with music, I can’t really pick one favorite, but a few of my favorites are To Kill a Mockingbird, The Hobbit, and Slaughterhouse Five. I guess my tastes are pretty eclectic. Though I enjoy fiction, I think it’s the most difficult genre to write. I am most comfortable writing informative essays, but when I was in high school, I wrote a lot of poetry. Why did you choose to teach English? I love that this subject allows for deep conversations and ideas for written expression. We can delve into fiction or nonfiction literature that covers a range of topics--everything from philosophical, to scientific, to historic. If you had to choose a different subject to teach what would it be? I would probably choose choir if I could play the piano for my students. I am a fan of just about every musical genre, and singing is a passion of mine. What sports/activities were you involved in during high school? Well, I wasn’t very good, but I ran in track. I was also in cheerleading and REACH (a group of students who acted as peer counselors for other students). My favorite activities were in the musical arena; I did choir, band, show choir, madrigals, plays/musicals, contests, special music for church events, etc… Was transitioning to a new school this year hard (like new schedules, lessons, setting up your room, etc….)? Change is a challenge for many people, and I am no exception. The first few weeks were definitely the trickiest--just getting used to my schedule and trying to learn all of the new names and faces. If you could take your students on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them? Oh my gosh--so many places! Well, I suppose we could stay local and start with the Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier. I’ve done that trip many times with students in the past, and it is always really neat. I think it would be fun to go to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. I’ve never been there. If I’m dreaming big, though, I’d have to say a trip to England would be amazing. Do you have any pets? Yes! My family and I have three cats: Toasty, Meg, and Felix. Where did you go to college and how many years did you go there? I went to Eastern Illinois University for four years. What was your college experience like? I couldn’t wait to go to college. I always looked forward to things like summer camp, and college was like that for me--an adventure! I loved meeting people from different backgrounds than I had and taking classes in my major. What do you enjoy doing over Summer Break? I love being with my family. It’s special to me that I am able to spend the summers with my kids creating memories. We travel a lot. My favorite thing to do is pack up and go on road trips or fly to see loved ones. What song do you know all of the lyrics to? “Oceans” by Hillsong United What is your Hogwarts house? Although it would be neat to be in Gryffindor with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, according to a virtual sorting hat quiz I just took online, I am House Hufflepuff! I think it’s legit. What would you say to your students to give them advice to help them become successful in high school, college, and their career? I would encourage them to work on developing good organizational and note taking skills. I would encourage them to pay attention in class and work on being active readers and critical thinkers; they have caring teachers who work really hard for them and want to enlighten them and see them succeed. I would also tell them to work on being empathetic with others. How you treat someone matters. It is so important to be kind; you never know what someone else is going through. I would tell them to take pride in their work: No matter what career you enter, do it to the best of your abilities. |
