Lily Monigold - Writer and Photographer On Friday, January 30th, the Le Roy High School girls’ basketball team was excited and ready for the celebrations to come with Senior Night. In one of their last home games, the team was playing against Tri-Valley. The team is coached by Chris Houser, Joe Chastain, and Chip Warlow. The first game played was Junior Varsity. With only six people on Le Roy’s team, the quarters were cut to five minutes each. The six girls playing were Jadyn Walker, Rylee Swanson, Kailey Hubble, Sydney Owens, Abby Wood, and Taylor Koerner. Excited for the game to come, the JV girls gave it their all. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 2-6; Jadyn Walker had scored the first basket for the team. At half time, the score was 6-18. While the girls were beginning to feel defeated, they continued to play hard. The final score of the game landed at 10-31. While this wasn’t the score the JV was hoping for, there were many good shots made. For instance, Rylee Swanson scored six points in total from two baskets and two made free throws. Sydney Owens also made a basket. Right after the JV game, the seniors came out one by one onto the court with their parents. They received hugs and flowers for their hard work and dedication to basketball. The seniors are Charly Warlow, Kiera Spratt, Layna Spratt, and Taylor Bagnell. After receiving flowers and a picture together, the varsity team began to warm up for the competitive game ahead of them. The starters, Tiffany Bargmann, Charly Warlow, Taylor Bagnell, Layna Spratt, and Kiera Spratt, were announced and the game was about to begin. In the first quarter, Layna Spratt scored a good amount of free throws and the team was making good baskets with the score at 13-5. In the second quarter, three-pointers were made by Emmy Tarr and Layna Spratt. There were great assists, and Le Roy managed to still maintain a lead against Tri-Valley. At half time, the score was 23-17. The second half of the game got more and more intense as Tri-Valley began to get ahead of Le Roy. At the end of the third quarter, the score was tied 33-33 and the team felt the pressure to get ahead in the last quarter. The coaches, audience, and players were all feeling tense. Everyone was on the edge of their seats to see what would happen next. After the score fluctuating throughout the fourth quarter, Tri-Valley won with the final score being 41-45. The game was very close and all of the girls played strong and hard. Both teams were similar in skill as the score was close. Most importantly, the seniors got the chance to be honored for all of the years of hard work they have put into basketball. Congratulations to Charly Warlow, Kiera Spratt, Layna Spratt, and Taylor Bagnell for everything you have put into basketball and I wish you success in what you decide to pursue in the future!

available, everyone was going to have to try their hardest and work well as a team if they planned on winning any of their rounds.
Le Roy’s first round was against Blue Ridge Scholastic Bowl, and they had only 6 people present for their team. Going into the match, both teams were fairly matched against each other. Blue Ridge had a strong start, with Le Roy struggling to remember information or to beat Blue Ridge to the buzzer. By halftime, Blue Ridge was beating Le Roy 120 to 50. Le Roy didn’t give up, but ended up falling behind even more. Le Roy lost their first match at 270 to 120 in Blue Ridge’s favor. Needless to say, Le Roy had a rough start. With renewed energy, Le Roy started their second round against Christian Luther, who also had very few team members present. Le Roy gained the first points of the round, and eventually took a major lead against Christian Luther. By halftime, the round was 110 to 90 in Le Roy’s favor. Although not a big gap, it was a step in the right direction. Luckily, Le Roy pulled even farther ahead and won their second round 190 to 110. This put the team in great spirits, and they were ready for their final round of the night. With new pep and energy, Le Roy faced off against their final team of the night. Le Roy started off very strongly, gaining 30 points with their first toss-up and three bonuses. The opposing team pulled ahead, though, and won the first half of the round at 100 to 80. Le Roy wasn’t going to back down that easily and put up a great fight to gain as many points as they could. Their efforts paid off, and Le Roy won their final round of the night at 180 to 150. Despite losing one of their rounds, Le Roy was thrilled to have won two out of three rounds. The team went home with bright smiles and renewed energy for their next meet they would be competing in. If you want to see the Le Roy High School Scholastic Bowl team in action, they will be facing off again on the 6th of February at a home meet at 4:30 P.M. They will also be going to the Masonic Bowl on the 15th of February at 8 A.M. and would love your support. Lily Monigold - Writer Studying abroad is when you travel to another country to study and attend school for an extended period of time; usually with a host family. There are many benefits as well as drawbacks to studying abroad. For instance, the drawbacks are the cost, getting your parents to agree, and meeting the school’s requirements. However, studying abroad can also be good because you get experience with a new language, culture, and gain international experience. You may have thought that studying abroad is only really a big thing in college, but there are actually many great programs offered while in high school. Many programs have the option to study abroad to a variety of different countries and continents. There are also different length options; usually a semester or year. If you are taking a language class you can go to a country and become directly exposed to the language and learn to use it to communicate with your host family and in school. This will help you improve rapidly, and learning a new language can be very important to put you over the edge for college and jobs. Other benefits of studying abroad in high school include students getting out of their comfort zone. Getting out of your comfort zone can help you become more flexible, creative, and productive. Living in another country develops independence and responsibility. You need to become responsible with your schooling and education by making sure you let your teacher know if you don’t understand something. Traveling abroad in high school gives you international experience at a young age. Lucy Thayn’s whole family went to Mexico for a semester a couple of years ago. When asked about her experience in Mexico, she said, “My experiences in Mexico have been some of my favorite things that I’ve ever done. It’s been so interesting being immersed in another culture and seeing how different things are from country to country. The food, attractions, and people are so different between states, and even between different towns in Mexico. It was a very educational and informative experience.” While there are many amazing benefits of studying abroad, there are also a few drawbacks. For instance, it can get expensive really fast. One popular website that offers studying abroad in high school, CIEE, has prices starting around $15,000 that go up to even around $30,000 for a year. Semester prices aren’t much cheaper. While this website also offers scholarships, it costs $25.00 just to enter and it most likely holds a slim chance of getting it. You and your parents trying to pay for this can take away the money you may have saved for college, which could cause you to become more in dept later in life. As well as being very expensive, it can be hard to fit the study programs and schooling to your own schools requirements. Getting your parents to agree to letting you go to a different country for semester or a year for a hefty price is very hard as well. If you succeed in doing this and then arrive to your chosen country, you can experience bad homesickness for you’re leaving your family and home for a long period of time. Depending on what country you choose, there can also be a slight travel risk of going overseas or to a different country. Some students may find it hard to cope without their familiar support group like friends, family, and others they rely on. There are upsides as well as downsides to studying abroad in high school. It isn’t always for everyone because of the price, homesickness, or simply it not working out with your school’s requirements. However, a lot of those who decided to travel abroad in high school have stated they have taken away once-in-a-lifetime-experiences and learned life-long lessons.
