Writer/Photographer - Lily Monigold This afternoon, Le Roy headed out to the football field to give their support to the Le Roy football players. While they are not used to playing football in March and the Homecoming game being on a Saturday instead of a Friday, many are grateful to finally be able to get out and play. Football season is something that has been highly anticipated all year, and it is finally here and in full swing. Everything looked good with Le Roy scoring the first touchdown of the game. However, a little bit later Ridgeview came in with a touchdown of their own. The game was 6-6 going into the 4th and last quarter. Panther fans were on the edge of their seats hoping for a Le Roy touchdown to pull through. To their excitement, Le Roy got a touchdown as well as a two-point conversion; bringing the final score to 14-6 with a win from the Panthers! The game is available to watch via Facebook live, filmed by a few students a part of Sports Marketing; Emmy Tarr, Nate McKnight, and Lily Monigold: www.facebook.com/LeRoyPantherAthletics/videos/275724597413219/?t=6 www.facebook.com/LeRoyPantherAthletics/videos/912056869549701/?t=9 www.facebook.com/LeRoyPantherAthletics/videos/4188047297880930/?t=9

On Friday the 5th, the high school boys played two basketball games; one JV and one varsity game. Although this has been an untraditional year, the school, coaches, parents, and most importantly the players have done great things even with the restrictions. One fun thing that happened at this game was that the varsity cheerleaders wore the varsity boys away game jerseys. The teams played good defense; they were unselfish in passing the ball to their teammates so they could make the shot instead of making it themselves. They also were pressuring the ball and were more polished than the other team. Both teams played great games overall. The JV game at halftime had a score of 35 to 24 with Le Roy up. The boys played well at the game. They continued to play great and ended up winning the game with a score of 61 to 23. The Panthers had won! Way to go boys! The Varsity boys also played a great game. They played hard and their effort paid off. At halftime, the score was 43 to 22. The Panthers were looking like they were going to have another win. In the end, the Varsity Panthers also won their game. 86 to 52 was the final score. Congrats Panther boys! On Thursday the 4th, the girls basketball teams played two great games against Fisher. This was the girls’ last game and the cheer senior night for basketball. Although this year has not been very traditional, the girls did great. We have the coaches and our school to thank for how much effort they have put in to let these games happen all year. We should also thank the girls on the team for putting in hours of work. For senior cheer girls night, all of the senior girls received a bouquet of flowers and a tie-dye blanket of our school colors; maroon and gold. They were also announced and brought in front of the crowd with their parents. They were announced by Mr. Reschke. The girls were also given 4 tickets for spectators. The JV girls played the first game. At halftime, Le Roy was up 15 to 7. Le Roy continued in this pattern until the end of the game with a score of 27 to 19. Congratulations to the JV team on ending the season with a win. At Varsity halftime, the Varsity girls kept the same trend as the JV with a score of 37 to 21. The Varsity girls won their game with an ending score of 64-44. It was a great night for the Le Roy girls! This last Thursday on March 4th, 2021, the Le Roy High School Scholastic Bowl team held one of their most important matches of the year: their second Regionals match. Le Roy was able to place in one of the top Scholastic Bowl teams in the state, meaning they will compete with other teams for first place. Before Thursday, the Scholastic Bowl team had a close first Regionals match on Tuesday that ended at 80 to 130 with Le Roy coming out on top. Due to the fact that the Scholastic Bowl team lost some students because of other sport commitments, the odds were not in the team’s favor at Thursday’s match against Flanagan Cornell High School. The only two students able to attend the meet were seniors Jacob Gaul and Mary Thayn; the only senior students on the entire Scholastic Bowl team. Despite having the odds against them, both students were excited for the match with their coach Ashlie Marcy cheering them on. The match started off slowly, with each team having trouble answering questions. The questions ranged in topics from literature, math, history, pop culture, and much more. Le Roy gave it their best efforts in the first half, but came up short with the game being 30 to 50 in Flanagan’s favor by halftime. Le Roy did not let the pressure get to them and continued to give their best to the very end. The last question ended in a tie -- which is quite rare in Scholastic Bowl. In the last bonus question, Jacob Gaul was able to save the team and got the question correct, ending the game at 100 to 90 in Le Roy’s favor. Cheers went all around for the team as they move on to their next match. team’s captain. This meant that Jacob was in charge of leading the team through any and all bonus questions they received. The position of captain is switched for every game between Jacob Gaul and Mary Thayn, so both have had equal amounts of leadership. Jacob lead his team well and made sure to give everyone a chance to give their thoughts and ideas.
The beginning of the match went extremely well for Le Roy’s team, and they had a 30 point lead at 90 - 60 by halfway through the game. Questions involving book authors, historical events, geography, and others did not phase the team. Flanagan took the lead in points and by ¾ of the way through the game, the score being 140 - 120 with Flanagan winning. While Le Roy did try their best to come back, Flanagan won at 160 -140, which is an extremely close game that not many matches have. Despite losing the match, Le Roy was excited to have done their final scrimmage. Now the team waits for results to see if they will be in regionals. Check back soon to learn more and see what happens! |
