This last Thursday on March 4th, 2021, the Le Roy High School Scholastic Bowl team held one of their most important matches of the year: their second Regionals match. Le Roy was able to place in one of the top Scholastic Bowl teams in the state, meaning they will compete with other teams for first place. Before Thursday, the Scholastic Bowl team had a close first Regionals match on Tuesday that ended at 80 to 130 with Le Roy coming out on top. Due to the fact that the Scholastic Bowl team lost some students because of other sport commitments, the odds were not in the team’s favor at Thursday’s match against Flanagan Cornell High School. The only two students able to attend the meet were seniors Jacob Gaul and Mary Thayn; the only senior students on the entire Scholastic Bowl team. Despite having the odds against them, both students were excited for the match with their coach Ashlie Marcy cheering them on. The match started off slowly, with each team having trouble answering questions. The questions ranged in topics from literature, math, history, pop culture, and much more. Le Roy gave it their best efforts in the first half, but came up short with the game being 30 to 50 in Flanagan’s favor by halftime. Le Roy did not let the pressure get to them and continued to give their best to the very end. The last question ended in a tie -- which is quite rare in Scholastic Bowl. In the last bonus question, Jacob Gaul was able to save the team and got the question correct, ending the game at 100 to 90 in Le Roy’s favor. Cheers went all around for the team as they move on to their next match.
