My name is Mary Thayn and I am one of the editors and founders of The Paw Print. How the idea for this newspaper came about was from my fellow editor and founder, Lily Monigold. We were both in Cross Country together and she mentioned off-hand that she had wanted to start a school newspaper for a while and that she thought it would look good on a college resume. I immediately jumped at the idea.
I had attempted to start a gossip newspaper in seventh grade that never led anywhere and was sort of embarrassing, but this time I sort of knew what I was getting myself into. I had been included in designing and re-making a website for the Le Roy museum and knew my way around Weebly and I realized that in order to make a newspaper with so little participants, online was the way to go. Lily and I began brainstorming. After getting permission from Mr. Baughman to start, we met up and began discussing formatting. It snowballed from there. We got a few other people to help us out and we began. I was mostly in charge of creating our website and making it easily editable and accessible, easy to insert articles after Lily and I had edited them. Lily was mostly in charge of rallying our troops, letting our members know what was going on and doling out responsibilities. I think that school newspapers are wonderful things for schools, especially when run by students. They inform and offer experience for students who are thinking of pursuing a journalistic career and allow those students to publish something for their own, have their works read. It is also a tremendous opportunity for photographers who are exploring their options after school, what they would like to use their skills for and how. Personally, I am going to use this experience and this opportunity to expand my knowledge of the writing world and also hopefully grow in leadership experience and management. I have always wanted to be a writer, but I have always been focused on novels and books and mostly fantasy. Having been given the perfect excuse to further my informative and educational writing I am excited to hone my skills in a new area and gain an understanding of what I may want from a career before heading off to college. I am looking forward to making this idea a reality and hopefully setting it up for success for a long time coming. I want students to have the opportunity to explore their journalistic tendencies and to be able to put their experiences on college resumes, proving their growth and knowledge. I hope that this newspaper will continue for years and years and grow and improve and loan students practical skills. I hope that students will read and continue to read and I hope that other members of our community will be informed and entertained. I want to bring recognition to students and their accomplishments in sports, in both the visual and performing arts, and their general life accomplishments. It is an honor to bring this to the community and I hope it will only improve.
