stepped in and started calling the shots. This upheaval of authority wasn’t obvious. President Wilson was on bed rest, and she explained how she brought things before the president;
“So began my stewardship. I studied every paper, sent from the different Secretaries or senators, and tried to digest and present in tabloid form the things that, despite my vigilance, had to go to the President. I myself never made a single decision regarding the disposition of public affairs. The only decision that was mine was what was important and what was not, and the very important decision of when to present matters to my husband.” This wasn’t exactly true, however. According to almost all doctors and physicians who came to see President Wilson, he couldn’t even speak. The way he “communicated” with Edith his wishes were by little, weakly written notes in the margins of the documents she read to him, although, many sources claimed to be unsure about whether or not the scribblings were a result of his weak muscles or from the non-dominant hand of his wife. Her decisions behind the scenes never had any real effect of the American people or Government. There are two sides to the argument. Edith let her love for president Wilson get in the way of true reason, or, she did what she deemed necessary and fulfilled her duty as First Lady. There is no real proof that Edith wasn’t doing exactly what she said she was doing, and no one in that time decided to take action against her, but I haven’t found any sources that claim she was being completely truthful.
