the Sound,” was one of the hardest songs ever attempted by the chorus because it had ten different parts. They killed it! In another one of their songs sang, “Li’l Red Riding Hood,” the group had a fun time with the catchy song, and a wolf howl brought it together. The last song the chorus group sang, “How Can I Keep from Singing?”, tied their beautiful performance together with Parker Daugherty and Miranda Little singing very well in their solos. In total, Chorus sang six songs. Next up to perform, Junior High Band took the stage. There are almost always High School Band students who join them. During this performance, McKenna Lange, Kaylee Acton, and Mary Russell joined them. After their songs “Above and Beyond” and “The Forge of the Vulcan” were played, it was time for the closing performance.
All of those who participated in HOIC for Chorus or Band were given a shoutout during the concert. Chorus members Hallie Buss, Miranda Little, Emma Quaid, Morgan Steege, Blake Walker, Parker Daughtery, Regan Henry, and Katie Garee all participated in HOIC. Band members who participated in HOIC are Tanis Scaggs, Anthony Fanelli, Hannah Quaid, McKenna Lange, and Mary Russell. Good job to everyone involved with HOIC!
The Spring Band and Chorus concert was a very enjoyable time and listening to the beautiful voices, instruments, and talented musicians is a must-do. Upcoming dates include another Chorus concert on May 6th and a Band concert on May 7th. Be sure to check out the next concerts to support your school and hear the musical talent Le Roy has.

Mary Thayn - Writer We had an auditorium. Why build a new one when we had one? - The original auditorium was torn down with the rest of the school when it was decided we needed a new one. This decision was made because our old high school was behind technologically and behind in terms of safety and code compliance. The biggest problem were the lentils (the metal beams which supported the bricks around the windows). Those would cost over a million dollars to replace them. The board went through every viable option, seeing what we could do with what we had and if perhaps we could just re-design a couple of things to improve it. It was discovered that with the building being so old and it being out of code safety compliance is many ways, that it would cost roughly the same to tear it down and build a new one. The decision was made to tear it down. The auditorium at the time was severely lacking, again referring to code compliance, and it was in no way compliant. Asbestos rained from the ceiling, and it was not handicapped accessible in any way. The original plan for the project was to rebuild everything we had, add better safety/health features, and add a few more things technology-wise. Unfortunately, during the process of re-building, buried fuel tanks and oil were discovered that had caused considerable pollution. The price of rebuilding slowly went up and they were unable to build the full project idea. Over time, these things have been restored, for example, the wrestling room, the AG greenroom, and the weight room. The last thing we have yet to restore is the auditorium. When would construction begin?/When would construction be complete? - Groundbreaking would be expected to begin in the Spring of 2021 and continue building through the 2022 to 23 school year. It would be finished in August 2023. Why can’t we add more parking on the front grounds of the elementary school? - The problem there lies in what is under the grounds. That area is pretty swampish, and the only way we could renovate that and turn it into a parking space would be to drain it, thereby flooding the surrounding area. Unless we took it outside the city limits, but that would cost even more money and we couldn’t afford that. We are taking a look at what can be done with the space behind the school, but nothing has been proposed yet. How will this project affect daily school traffic and summer sport traffic during construction? - Based on calculations by the administration and by our construction partners, a schedule has been drawn up so as not to disturb usual classes and keep our students on track. Safety is the number one priority in this and the athletic fields and elementary access points will remain accessible throughout the entirety of the project.
What will happen to the current district office space on Cherry Street, and the current Elementary Office? - There are many options that we could use this space for. It could be transformed into an entrepreneurial space for students, it would be used as extra space for the school and other services, or it could be sold. Whatever the case, it won’t be useless.
Will graduation be hosted there? - No. Graduation will remain in the gym, on account of the fact that the gym can hold upwards of a thousand people and the auditorium will only hold five-hundred. We don’t want to restrict the number of people who come to graduation, so it will remain in the gym. Just as a reminder, the vote for the auditorium will be on March 17th. Stay posted for the student poll results to come as well. Gracie Seversike - Interviewer
Haden McKenzie In your opinion does the cast work well together?: Yes. Very well. We all have good connections, we all work well with each other. What are some of the biggest challenges the cast has had to face?: Probably getting on stage on time and teaching the youngins how to tap, but they’re still doing good. What are some accomplishments that the cast has made?: We’ve all bonded together, gotten closer and made lots of new friends, but overall characters and how we act on stage, how we represent them. Who in the cast has great energy?: Parker, Noah and Thomas. They’re there, they’re gods at what we do. We’re all told to match their energy. How do you feel about this being the seniors’ last show?: Very sad, next year is going to be very difficult. Last comments: Try it out, if you don’t like it don’t do it, if you like it come and do it, if you kinda like it, come and see it and do it. Katie Garee In your opinion does the cast work well together?: For the most part yes because we’ve done shows together before and we do band and chorus together so we already have background with each other, and so we’re already all friends and it’s easier to work together. What are some of the cast’s biggest accomplishments?: The dances--Shipoopi and Marian-- and then I think the Quartet has been doing a great job. What are some of the cast’s biggest challenges?: The dancing and costumes--dancing in the costumes and also costume changes. Who in the cast has great energy?: Noah and Tony. Tony does his accent and he really gets into his character. Do you and Noah work well together as the two leads in the show?: I think so, we get along well and we were already kind of friends before the show so it’s easier to work together, we just have good stage chemistry. Who are some seniors that you’re sad to see go this year?: Noah and Parker and Tony-- basically all of them. In your opinion what have the seniors offered to the theatre program while you’ve been here?: They’ve been very helpful with costume changes and they’ve helped bring energy--they just make rehearsals fun and more enjoyable. Lucy Thayn & Lily Beer In your opinion does the cast work well together?: Lily: Yes. Lucy: Some people don’t work well with certain other people, but if you’re speaking generally, yes. Who in the cast has great energy? Lily: I would say Sophie and Parker, they’re the ones who hype everybody up. Sophie’s always just hyping everyone up and, I don’t know, they just have good vibes. What are some of the biggest challenges this show has?: Lily: I would say line memorization. What are some of the biggest accomplishments this show has?: Lily: The biggest dances like Shipoopi and Marian are going very well, and I think the Quartet is doing great too. Lucy: We love the Quartet. You hear that, Quartet? You’re doing great. How do you feel about being freshmen and this being your first high school show?: Lucy: This group is a very good group and I like the people. Who are some great role models in this show that you look up to? Lucy: You. Gracie. Lily: Yes. Also Parker J. Daugherty. Lucy: And Hannah. We love Hannah. Basically the seniors. Junior high students (plus Aaron Bagnell) In your opinion, does the cast work well together?: All: Yes. Landon: We have the best chemistry I’ve ever seen, I’m just saying. Matt: We trust each other. Who in the cast would you say has great energy? Landon: Thomas and Noah. Matt: Noah, Thomas, Parker. Aaron: Mary Thayn. Matt: Mary’s really good at singing, she has amazing accents-- Landon: Parker scared me half to death as my dad in Trouble. Matt: Blake too, Blake’s super energetic. He’s very bouncy. Landon: Yeah, Blake’s got the kicks. But the main reason with Thomas is Shipoopi--Shipoopi gives everyone energy. What are some of the show’s biggest challenges? Matt: Choreography. It’s a lot different than junior high. I thought Get Your Head in the Game was hard, and now I’m over here tapping all over the place. As junior high students, what’s it like being in your first high school performance before being in high school?: Landon: It’s amazing. Matt: It’s such a better environment than junior high. Would you say the cast has better energy in the high school production?: Landon/Matt: Yes. What’s different between your junior high show and this show?: Matt: Dancing, the lines, how long the show is. Landon: It really shows you how much you have to improve and correct yourself. Matt:--how much Mr. Mettrick relies on you. Ethan: The costumes. Matt: Yeah, the costumes are amazing. Landon: And the fact that the costumes are very...not….today-like. It’s a different time period. What are some of the cast’s biggest accomplishments in this show?: Matt: The energy, the dancing-- Landon: The chemistry. Matt: --the energy with the dancing is probably the best thing about this. Who are some high school students that you really look up to/see as role models?: Landon: Literally all of them. Every single one. Matt: Parker, Aaron, Blake... Landon: Tom, Parker, Matt, Thomas. Matt: Most of the seniors. Landon: Parker literally helps me with everything. He helps me with dance, he helps me with lines, he helps me with singing, he is my dad… Do you feel grateful for having the opportunity to have a show with these seniors this year when you otherwise wouldn’t have gotten to perform with them? Landon: Yes. Matt: Yes because next year they’re gonna be gone. Landon: I’m literally gonna cry. Last comments: Matt: It’s amazing. (the show) Becca: You should definitely come see it, because it’s gonna be great. Matt Williamson, Haden McKenzie, Parker Daugherty, Thomas Toohil, Aiden Osborn In your opinion does the cast work well together?: Parker: I’d say so. Haden: There’s good times and there’s bad times. Matt: For the most part I’d say yes. Parker: Everyone gets stressed and mad at each other sometimes, but in the end we all work well together. Thomas: I feel everyone works together strongest at dancing. We’re all learning it for the first time, and we’re learning it together-- Parker: It’s an equal playing field. Who in the cast has great energy?: Haden: Thomas and Noah. Matt: Thomas and Noah. Aiden: Thomas and Noah. Haden: It’s just their stage presence, like... I want to be like them but I can’t. Thomas: I like Parker’s stage presence. Haden: Thomas, Noah, and Parker; their stage presence is just TNT. What are some of the cast’s biggest accomplishments?: Parker: I think coming together with the sets and everything and being able to do the dances both in and out of costumes--the costumes make it so much harder so being able to transfer from dancing to doing it in character--that’s a cool accomplishment. Final comments: Thomas: I feel like we always forget to thank Mr. Scott. Parker: Mr. Scott puts so much work into the lighting and the sound design and that’s really helpful. I’d also like to say for anyone who’s thinking about it, theatre and music in LeRoy has been some of my favorite experiences and we’re always looking for new people, but I feel that people get kind of scared just because they don’t do stuff like that outside of things, so I think just try it once and see what you think--definitely start with the musical because it’s more high energy, but don’t be scared to put yourself out there. It’s a family. Kaylee Acton Who in the cast has great energy?: Noah Conn. He definitely has the most energy out of all of us. Him or Parker. Parker always yells at other people when they don’t have energy. Noah’s just really a positive person and he always knows what he’s doing and helps others that need help. What would you say are some of the biggest challenges the cast has had to face?: Probably dancing. We’re learning new styles of dancing that we’ve never had to do before--just the dances and learning new things. In your opinion does the cast work well together?: Yeah I think that most of us work really well together. It was different this year when we brought up jr. high kids, some of us had never met them before, but after the first few weeks we got to know each other and it was really good. What are some of the cast’s biggest accomplishments?: Learning Shipoopi. Shipoopi was a very difficult dance when we first learned it and we’ve all got it down really good right now. Becca Lehr In your opinion does the cast work well together?: I think so. Everyone’s friends so I think it works well together. What are some of the biggest challenges this show has had?: Lines and figuring out how to put energy in dances. What are some of the cast’s biggest accomplishments?: Finally learning 76 Trombones and Shipoopi. Getting through all of the long dances without stopping or needing to go over them again. Who in the cast has really great energy?: Thomas and Parker because Parker always seems to know what he’s doing and then Thomas always has energy. Gracie Seversike - Interviewer
In your opinion does the cast work well together? Tony: I’d have to say yes, other than a few times where people get aggravated after some long practices, everyone seems to kind of join together at the end and make one big show. Katie: I agree, there can be hard times but we do all come together and do our best and work together. Tony: There might be times where you get paired up with someone you don’t want to. Katie: That’s true, and you’ve gotta work through that and make the best out of it. Who in the cast has great energy? Katie: Definitely Parker and Noah, they have really good energy, they have a lot of experience and talent and it definitely shows. They are amazing examples to all of the underclassmen and junior high kids. Tony: I’d have to state the obvious and say myself… Katie: Obviously. Tony: I’d have to say Blake. Ever since Newsies, Blake gets into his character, and he does a dang good job. Katie: I completely agree. Tony: In Newsies I was like--holy moly-- he just got into his character, and he got a good part in Government Inspector, but not one where he could truly show off his skills, so I’m a little bummed that he never got a big role but Blake is definitely really good at acting and singing. Katie: I will admit that every time he says “girly girl” I do get the cringes, but he does it very well, and I guess that’s why that happens. What are some of the biggest challenges the cast has had to face in this show?: Katie: Dancing. There’s a lot of steps, and I know Newsies was hard too, it’s just a lot of steps to memorize and you really have to practice and work on it on your own--it takes a lot of practice, hard work, and dedication. Tony: The dancing has been really hard but we’ve really only been practicing dancing so we really have our dancing down-- the dialogue. That’s been rough. We’ve only had three dialogue practices before tech week so once it started, everyone was fumbling with their lines, even right now I stumble through a lot of my lines, we did not practice dialogue as much as we should have. That’s been a big problem. Katie: I feel like we could have done more read throughs, but we’re working hard to get that, but you’ve gotta work through the challenges. What are some of the cast’s biggest accomplishments?: Katie: Also the dancing; we’ve worked really hard with the practices and it’s been great to see everyone work really hard and see everyone so dedicated. Tony: I’d say everyone does a really good job of sinking into their characters--nobody really breaks character when they’re not supposed to, everyone just plays their character really well, everyone was just casted really well. (Tony) How do you feel about being a senior and this being your last show?: Tony: Honestly, I’ve got some mixed feelings. At the beginning of the musical, I was originally told that I was not going to sing and dance--which I was very excited about because I’m not the best singer or dancer-- and then I was told that I did have to sing and dance, and I was very upset about that because I had to come to double the amount of practices I had originally thought I was supposed to. In the beginning I hated it, but once it became second nature to me I enjoyed it a lot more. There were times when I really wish I did not audition but now I’m glad I did and I’m having a lot of fun with my part. This is honestly a really good performance and I’m glad it’s my last, but a small part of me wishes that Government Inspector was my last performance. (Katie) How do you feel being a freshman and this being your first high school performance?: Katie: I’m loving it so far. At first I wasn’t too excited about what the musical was because Newsies was so great, but I really love that I’ve gotten to know a lot more of the upperclassmen and I’m very sad that this will be my only musical with the seniors. I know it’s gonna be hard leaving them, but they’re gonna leave a great legacy. Yeah, it’s been really fun, I’ve learned a lot, and it’s been a really cool experience. Final comments: Tony: Although I’ve been in the music program since fifth grade, I’ve never really been super involved-- I’ve been a percussionist who does the absolute minimum-- until about my sophomore year when I randomly out of nowhere decided to join Grease, and I had the time of my life. At that point I was like “okay I should definitely get more involved”. And then I did Our Town, and then I was like “I should have done this my freshman year!”. And so, although I’m a little bummed that I didn’t get involved earlier, I feel like I’ve had an ideal experience with acting. I love being a part of the plays and musicals and I love everyone who’s in it--the cast just becomes one big family, everyone loves each other, and we all have a fun time. And although I may leave, I’m coming back to see all the future performances because you guys are my family. |
