My name is Lily Monigold and I am an editor and co-founder of The Paw Print along with Mary Thayn. I do not fully remember how or when the idea of starting a school newspaper came to me. I do know that I have been thinking about it and hoping to set it into action for multiple months now because of my love for writing and photography.
When I first got this idea, I wasn’t sure where to start with it or how to make it go from an idea to a real school paper. Knowing how excellent Mary’s writing is, I knew that when I first mentioned the idea to her during Cross Country that she would think it would be cool. I never expected her to be ready and fully involved in helping me make a school newspaper. I do not think I would be able to get a newspaper going without the help of Mary. She has been talking to Mr. Baughman and Mr. Henderson to get all of the technical parts of this idea into motion. As to why I want to start a school paper, The Paw Print, it stems from my love of writing. I have written a few creative writing stories, but I have never gotten very into them. I enjoy writing essays from gathering information and facts. I hope to learn how to better do this through writing articles for The Paw Print, and learn if this could be a possible career for me. As well as enjoying writing, I have also gotten into photography within the last couple of years. I really enjoyed taking photos for the Jr. High Yearbook, and it would be so exciting to take photos for The Paw Print. I want to continue to learn and develop my journalism skills through this. Similarly, another reason as to why I want to start a school newspaper is because of the impact it could have on our school and students. For instance, forming a school paper would be a great opportunity for students to know what is going on at their school and for the members to continue to grow with their photography and writing skills. Doing this can help students learn what future career they may want; like journalism or photography. It helps involve and benefit the members, the students, and even the community. My future hopes for The Paw Print is for it to become a newspaper created and developed by a team of aspiring writers and photographers who want to improve their skills for upcoming career goals. Students need to be able to develop different types of skills and try out new things in order to find out what they really want to do after high school. I cannot wait to contribute to this and am excited to see how it affects other people and how it grows over time.
